New Spirits In Ambience Release
Interview by Brittany Fox
A friend of mine recently
turned me on to a wonderful CD. I was saying how much I like Ambient music when
Im in a certain mood, she said you should check out this CD called Spirits In
Ambience. She let me borrow her copy for a few days, and I loved it.
Spirits in Ambience is the project brainchild of musician/producer Mark Peacock
Which was released in 2001, She told me he Just released a new project called
Momentos and I wanted to hear all about the new music.
I contacted Mark Peacock at Avilon Studios in Burbank where the deep melodies
and exotic grooves of the new CD Momentos played in the background as I
interviewed Mark
BF. So when and how did you
become involved in Ambient music?
MP. Well I played with a band Digital Response in the late 80's and our primary
sound was keyboards and Synths. I played bass in that band, but at the time it
really got me interested in Electronica and Ambient music. I've always been a
big fan of Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and so many others probably to long to
list.
So I picked up a synth and played with it for a while. I kept playing bass with
various bands and slowly started collecting gear at home and built a studio
there.
In 1997 I opened Avilon Music in Burbank with Greg Vossberg we teamed up to
record bands and also to do music for film and television. And we needed a
public facility to accomplish those needs.
It was during this time that I really started to do quite a bit of recording of
my own music
which tended to be in the Ambient Groove realm.
And the end result of those sessions was the 2001 release of Spirits in Ambience
BF. I see that you play a great portion of the music and write all the songs,
but you also used some other musicians on your CD's core of musicians for all my
projects, and they are
Tovar who is an amazing lead guitar player, who has done stints with Chaka Khan
and Bobby Kimball, J'Anna Jacoby is a friend of Tovar's who was playing in a
band with him at the time called Azul but she is really known around here for
her fine work as Rod Stewart's Violinist. For me it was like baking a cake and
having these superb musicians put the frosting on.
BF. So you have released a new CD called Momentos
MP. Yes that's true, You see Spirits in Ambience is a continuing project coming
out every few years with a new collection. This time around I used both Michael
and J'Anna again. J'Anna plays her viola on many of the songs which give them a
very rich and dark texture. And Michael flat out plays some of the best leads
he's ever done for me.
BF. Wow! That sounds great, tell me a little about the music.
MP. Let me see, the best way I can put it is that I try and tell the listener a
story and hopefully put them in a place where they can drift off. Let the music
conjure up images in their mind. Many of the songs I write have titles of Greek
myths and through the music I try and give you a sense of that story or a place.
I always find it interesting what people say they see in their minds eye when
they hear certain songs.
The first CD was very languid with a sense of mystery; this new one has more
emphasis on the grooves and some of the themes are darker in tone. But there are
a wide range of moods and some more musical stories of a few of the myths I
like.
BF. During this interview I found your music to be very deep and seductive with
your ability to harness the energy behind lifes smiles and tears. Your
arrangements of world grooves and heartfelt instrumentation really takes you on
a musical path.
This new CD Momentos is truly an amazing work, I would recommend this music to
anyone! Thank you so much for your time today Mark.
MP. It's been my pleasure Brittany
